The Hard-Boiled Poker Radio Show, Episode 12: Gunsmoke, The Gambler

The Hard-Boiled Poker Radio ShowNew show up today. In this one I spend some time with David Spanier’s 1977 collection Total Poker. Then, as is the case with all the shows, there comes a complete episode of an old time radio show. This time it’s Gunsmoke starring William Conrad as Matt Dillon. The episode is titled “The Gambler.”

As I mentioned before, I’m going to see if I can keep up with producing a new show every other week. Have some comedy stuff to pass along here in the near future, so that should be fun.

So far I’ve managed to include a different old time radio show in each of the 12 episodes of the Hard-Boiled Poker Radio Show, all of which have had something to do with poker and/or gambling. Here’s a quick run down of all the different shows that have been featured thus far on the HBPRS (the links take you to each episode’s entry on the show’s website):

Episode 1: Inner Sanctum Mysteries (“Dead Man’s Deal”)
Episode 2: The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe (“The Killer Cards”)
Episode 3: Duffy’s Tavern (“Playing Poker with Charles Coburn”)
Episode 4: Suspense (“Hitchhike Poker”)
Episode 5: Mystery in the Air (“The Queen of Spades”)
Episode 6: Escape (“The Ambassador of Poker”)
Episode 7: Fibber McGee and Molly (“Poker Game”)
Episode 8: Frontier Gentleman (“Aces and Eights”)
Episode 9: Nick Carter, Master Detective (“The Case of the Poker Murders”)
Episode 10: CBS Radio Mystery Theater (“Come, Fill My Cup”)
Episode 11: The Cisco Kid (“Poker Chip Draw”)
Episode 12: Gunsmoke (“The Gambler”)

As you might imagine, there ain’t an infinite number of these suckers floating around, but I’ve still got quite a few for future shows.

You can subscribe to the podcast over in iTunes by clicking here. And as always, send yr feedback to shamus at hardboiledpoker dot com.

Shamus, if you ever run out of shows, the reading of the short story of Bert Brecht was amazing and you could always sprinkle those in. Thanks so much for doing these podcasts.

Short...Your old buddy Aces88ss here. As always, I am rewarded by putting your podcast first on my list of things to listen to. Another excellent episode in a series that you should be proud of. Very professionally done (at the very least, conveys the illusion of professionally done, which is just as good).

I do have a suggestion...One of my personal favorites, Damon Runyon (famous for the short stories that inspired Guys and Dolls on Broadway, and dozens of movies including Little Miss Marker (the movie that made Shirley Temple a star), The Lemon Drop Kid (Where Bob ope first sang "Silver Bells"), Money from Home (The first Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin Color movie (and it was also meant to be watched with those cool 3-d glasses from the 50's, which is why it is rarely shown on TV), and dozens of others.

He has his name converted to an adjective in the dictionary, Runyonesque ...One of my favorite words that I have asked to be included on my tombstone.

In addition, the Damon Runyon Theatre dramatized 52 of his short stories for radio.

If you broaden your criteria for inclusion in the podcast to gambling in general, most of the episodes would fit in nicely. If you broaden even further to include degenerate neer do well (how do you spell that phrase) gamblers, all of the episodes fit.

While most of the episodes fit horse racing better, one in particular, "The Lacework Kid" features a card shark (Damon's word, shark, not sharp)captured by the Germans during WWII (the war to end all wars)

And most related to poker, JUDY THE JIMX...Dancer Judy Jenson earns the name "The Jinx" when every show she appears in closes. She falls for a gambler who uses her unique skill to help him out at the poker table.

Hope this helps, I always look forward to something I don't know (meaning your choices have always entertained and surprised me), but I would also look forward to the "Short Stack Shamus" treatment of something I have already enjoyed.

As always, thank you again and look forward to your second dozen episodes

Thanks, bellatrix! Am definitely planning to do more of the stories, including one for the next episode I've had in mind for a good while now. Those are fun to do.

And thanks, aces88ss, for the great suggestion! Will most definitely see if I can get some Runyon on the show at some point. From the beg. I thought I'd need to be willing to include non-poker gambling stuff in order to keep the sucker going, and the Runyon shows sound like a terrific idea.
